Why the same route quotes differently.
One-way vs round-trip
A round-trip with the aircraft waiting is rarely double a one-way — same-day returns typically price at 1.6–1.85× because the operator keeps the crew and jet committed but flies only one leg each way. True one-ways are cheapest when your routing matches traffic the operator already needs to move; that is the entire logic behind empty-leg deals.
Repositioning is the hidden line item
Quoted prices include flying the jet to your departure airport. If no suitable aircraft is based nearby, that ferry time — sometimes an hour or more — lands on your invoice. This is why Miami–Nassau can quote below Miami–Key West on some days: dozens of jets are already sitting at Opa-locka and Fort Lauderdale.
Daily minimums and short hops
Most operators bill a two-hour daily minimum per flight day. A 40-minute hop like Miami–Key West therefore prices closer to two flight hours than to the airborne time. On very short routes, a turboprop or even a sedan transfer is often the rational call — we will tell you when it is.
When prices spike
- Holiday peaks — Thanksgiving week, Christmas–New Year and Presidents' Day add 20–40% on resort routes like Aspen, Jackson Hole and Telluride.
- Event weekends — Art Basel Miami, the Masters, Super Bowl and F1 weekends tighten supply at specific airports months ahead.
- De-icing season — winter departures from the Northeast and mountain airports carry de-ice charges of $1,500–$6,000 per application, quoted after the fact by most operators.
- International handling — Bahamas and Mexico legs add overflight permits, handling and customs overtime fees of $800–$2,500 depending on arrival time.
