Quote Mechanics

Private jet charter cost, line by line.

The direct answer: a private flight costs $3,200–$12,500 per flight hour, so most US charters total $5,000–$30,000 one-way after fees and the 7.5% federal excise tax. Below is exactly how a quote is assembled — and a real worked example you can audit against your own.

The Formula

Five components make every quote.

1. Block hours × hourly rate — the base

The core of any charter flight cost is block time: wheels-off to wheels-on plus taxi, multiplied by the aircraft's hourly rate. Rates scale with cabin class — light jets at $3,200–$3,500, midsize at $4,500–$4,800, super-midsize at $5,800–$6,500 and heavy jets at $9,500–$12,500 per hour in our fleet. Most operators also bill a two-hour daily minimum per flight day, which is why 40-minute hops price like two-hour flights.

2. Positioning — the hidden line item

Unless an aircraft is sitting at your departure airport, someone pays to move it there. That ferry time is charged at the same hourly rate and is the main reason identical routes quote differently from different operators. Deep-supply corridors (South Florida, New York, Dallas, LA) often position free; thin markets add $2,000–$10,000.

3. Landing, ramp and FBO fees

Every airport charges to land and park: typically $150–$500 at quiet regional fields, $800–$1,500+ at busy metros and resort airports in season. FBO handling, GPU power and crew cars add modest amounts on top.

4. Crew expenses on multi-day trips

Keep the aircraft overnight and you keep the crew: hotel, meals and per diem run $800–$1,500 per crew per night. Same-day returns avoid this entirely — one reason round trips price at 1.6–1.85× a one-way instead of double.

5. Taxes — 7.5% FET and friends

Domestic legs carry the 7.5% federal excise tax plus a per-passenger segment fee. International itineraries skip FET but pick up head taxes, overflight permits and customs overtime: budget $800–$2,500 for Bahamas and Mexico arrivals outside banker's hours. Winter departures can add de-icing at $1,500–$6,000 per application, billed after the flight.

FAQ

Charter cost, straight answers.

How much does it cost to charter a private jet?

Most domestic charters total $5,000–$30,000 one-way: figure $3,200–$12,500 per flight hour depending on aircraft size, plus fees and 7.5% federal excise tax. A two-hour light-jet trip like New York–Miami typically quotes around $12,000–$15,000 all-in.

What is a positioning or ferry fee?

If no suitable aircraft is based at your departure airport, the operator flies one in — and that empty leg is billed to you at the aircraft hourly rate. On routes with deep aircraft supply it is zero; at small or seasonal airports it can add an hour or more of flight time to the quote.

Is there a tax on private jet charters?

Yes — domestic US legs carry a 7.5% federal excise tax on the amount paid for the transportation, plus a per-passenger segment fee (about $5 in 2026). International legs are exempt from FET but collect US and foreign arrival/departure head taxes instead.

Why did my quote change between two dates?

Charter pricing floats with aircraft supply. Holiday peaks, event weekends and weather-driven demand shift the available fleet, and with it both hourly rates and positioning costs. The same New York–Aspen trip can quote 30–40% apart between a quiet Tuesday and Presidents' Day weekend.

How is a charter flight cost calculated?

Block hours (flight time plus taxi) × the hourly rate forms the base. On top: positioning legs to reach you, landing and FBO fees, crew overnights on multi-day trips, catering upgrades, de-icing when needed, and 7.5% FET on the domestic total. Our calculator models the base; an advisor firms up the rest.
