Ownership Economics

How much does a private jet cost?

The short answer: $3M–$90M+ to buy, then $700K–$4M a year to keep it flying. Renting the same aircraft by the hour costs $3,200–$12,500 per flight hour with nothing due when you are on the ground. For anyone flying under ~200 hours a year, the math almost always favors renting.

The Sticker Price

Buying: acquisition plus the meter that never stops.

A private jet is two purchases, not one. The airframe is the visible number; the operating budget is the one owners underestimate. Crew for a midsize jet runs $300,000–$450,000 a year before the aircraft leaves the hangar. Add hangar rent, insurance, maintenance program subscriptions, avionics updates and a management company, and a light jet idles through $1 million a year at zero flight hours.

Category Purchase price Annual operating cost To rent the same class
Turboprop $3M – $8M $700K – $1.2M $1,500 – $2,300 / hr
Light jet $5M – $13M $1M – $1.8M $2,600 – $3,800 / hr
Midsize jet $10M – $20M $1.6M – $2.6M $3,800 – $5,200 / hr
Super-midsize $18M – $33M $2.4M – $3.6M $5,200 – $7,500 / hr
Heavy jet $30M – $65M $3.2M – $5.5M $8,000 – $13,000 / hr
Ultra-long-range $55M – $90M+ $4M – $8M $12,000 – $16,000+ / hr

Where the annual budget actually goes

  • Crew — two typed pilots (plus a third for heavy international ops): $250,000–$700,000 with training and benefits.
  • Maintenance programs — engine and APU hourly programs, inspections, parts: $200,000–$1,500,000 depending on airframe.
  • Hangar & insurance — $60,000–$250,000 for shelter at a major metro, $30,000–$200,000 for hull and liability cover.
  • Management & subscriptions — a management company, navigation databases, connectivity and cabin Wi-Fi: $100,000–$400,000.
  • Fuel & trip costs — the only line that scales with flying: roughly $1,000–$4,500 per flight hour by size.
The Alternative

Renting: same cabin, none of the fixed cost.

On-demand charter converts all of that fixed overhead into a single hourly number you pay only when the wheels are up. Our fleet prices at $3,200–$12,500 per flight hour across light, midsize, super-midsize and heavy categories — see the live breakdown on the charter rates guide or by aircraft class: light, midsize, super-midsize and heavy.

The breakeven rule of thumb

Charter stops being the obvious answer around 150–200 hours a year on the same aircraft type. Above 200–300 hours, ownership or a fractional share starts to compete on cost per hour — and wins outright when you need guaranteed access on your schedule, a configured interior, or depreciation-driven tax treatment. Between 25 and 100 hours, the middle ground is a jet card or a membership program: rate locks and availability guarantees without a balance-sheet asset.

One caveat worth respecting: charter hourly rates include repositioning the aircraft to you, so an owner's jet based at your home airport always beats charter economics on one-way-heavy schedules. This is the honest case for buying — dense calendars, not prestige.

FAQ

Buy vs rent, straight answers.

How much does a private jet cost to buy?

Anywhere from about $3 million for a pre-owned turboprop to $90 million or more for a new ultra-long-range flagship. A typical light jet trades at $5–13 million, a super-midsize at $18–33 million, and a heavy jet at $30–65 million depending on age and pedigree.

How much does it cost to own a private jet per year?

Budget $700,000 a year for a turboprop flown modestly, up to $4–8 million for a heavy or ultra-long-range jet. Crew salaries, hangar, insurance, maintenance programs and management fees dominate; fuel and trip costs scale with how much you actually fly.

Is it cheaper to rent or buy a private jet?

Below roughly 150–200 flight hours a year, renting (charter) is almost always cheaper. Ownership only starts to pencil above 200–300 hours, and even then mostly for tax or scheduling-control reasons rather than pure cost.

What is the cheapest private jet to buy?

Pre-owned very light jets like the Citation Mustang or Eclipse 500 change hands around $1.5–3 million, and older King Air turboprops from about $2 million. Purchase price is the small number, though — annual operating costs start near $500,000 even at the entry level.

How much does it cost to rent a private jet instead?

Charter runs $2,600–$16,000 per flight hour depending on aircraft size, with no fixed costs when you are not flying. A light jet for a two-hour regional trip typically totals $6,000–$12,000 one-way; a super-midsize coast-to-coast flight runs $25,000–$35,000.
